What does it do?

  •  Get a Photography Friendly Forecast for anypoint on the planet.
  • Creat watches  around the weather by placing one or more weather templates on the map and selecting the time for your shoot.
  • Vary the requirements for each template from “Ideal” (most stringent) to completely “Optional” (like an additional pizza topping.. )

  • Setup notifications for each watch based on the days of notice you need, time of day you want to be notified.
  • When it's looking good, set an alarm, go to bed. We will check the forecast before we wake you up.

Why use Light Watch?

  • Weather is in the DNA of every photograph taken outside. Most photographers spend a great deal of time, planning around the weather. Not just for their own personal comfort, but to try and predict what the light will be like when on location. It can be a time-consuming task to keep an eye on the different conditions across multiple shooting locations and trying to make the best choice. Your choice ultimately shapes the outcome of the investment in effort needed to get to that location, at the desired time, and hopefully under interesting conditions. Many photographers have learned to roll with what is given them, and when successful are able to craft amazing images by being observant and creative. Others rely on the luck of the right place at the right time. We created The Light Watch to provide another tool to photographers to help them plan a shot, around the weather, increasing the likelihood of coming away with something special.

Key Concepts

  • Use basic templates for cloudy to clear conditions, fresh precipitation to dry, or pull from advanced templates like Rainbows, Crepuscular Rays, Fog, Above the Clouds, and many more. In fact, we have combined meteorology with earth/sun geometry to pull multiple weather forecasts from the shooting location; including the point you place the weather, and the position of the sun to help predict when certain shots can become reality.
  • You can choose the type of notification mode to use between requiring all weather conditions to match, or any conditions matching, giving you flexibiliy in how you setup your watches. Use "All" for that epic shot where everything must line up. Use "Any" to be notified when any form of interesting weather is forecasted.
  • Are you a weather nut? If so, create your own Custom Templates and apply them to your palette of possibilities. Each template allows you to define varying degrees of matching from what “Ideal” looks like, down to “OK”. With four different levels, you can dial in the threshold to use before being notified.
  •  On any given shot, you can vary the degree of conditions required before being notified. Once you get a shot; tighten up the conditions for that location, or change them all together, ensuing you get a unique experience every time you go.

Other things you should know...

Browse your watches in the list view, or pull up the map and browse them by location.

In addition to an alphabetical list, sort watches by proximity to you, or likelihood of happenning.

Wall off shots by time of year (seasons), so that they become inactive during times of the year when the conditions are not likely, or you simply won’t be able to go. This is also a great feature to use when planning a trip, where you can plan some shooting locations up front, and have them activated when you arrive.

The conditions for each watch, for the current and next three days, are displayed on the main list, allowing you to keep tabs on your target locations as the time to go gets closer.

Group your watches around a location, defining unique contions for different shooting times (sunrise, sunset, etc.) and/or by time of year (Spring, Summer, Spring/Summer/Fall, etc).

After you have your watches set, sit back, relax, and we will watch the weather for you! When it's time to go, set an alarm, and if you want, only have it go off if the conditions are still forecated!

Get just the right conditions....

Create your shots around the weather by placing one or more weather templates on the map and selecting the time for your shoot.

Define the conditions you want by pulling from the more than 30 weather templates provided from Light Watch, or the custom ones you create for yourself.

Use basic templates for cloudy to clear conditions, fresh precipitation to dry, or pull from advanced templates like Rainbows, Crepuscular Rays, Fog, Above the Clouds, and many more. In fact, we have combined meteorology with earth/sun geometry to pull multiple weather forecasts from the shooting location; including the point you place the weather, and the position of the sun to help predict when certain shots can become reality.

On any given shot, you can vary the degree of conditions required before being notified. As an example, you may indicate that you need “Ideal” cloud light conditions, but “Fresh Snow” is optional. In this way, you will be notified to go when the ideal cloud light conditions are forecasted, but the weight for the shooting location will be elevated when “Fresh Snow” is also forecasted.

Detailed Forecasts and Other Tools are at Your Fingertips...

The Light Watch comes with a pallete of tools allowing you to analyze the relevant forecast around your shot. We’ve provided topographic models showing the position of clouds, sun and terrain, so you can visualize what is predicted.

Access the Weather Panel to view the shooting conditions and how they are lining up with your requirements. Furether, a forecast for you comfort and safety, is provided for your consideration.

Drill into the Model Panel for any specific template to access detailed weather data, models and forecasts affecting the probability of that condition. Where applicable, a terrain map is provided to help you visualize the forecasted conditions for the shot.
